Shelter Island Heights is an area of the town of Shelter Island. It is accessible only by
ferry. Shelter Island Heights was founded as a
summer camp and
resort for the Methodist Episcopal Church. The camp met here for eight years before relocating to Jamesport. Prior to moving to
Jamesport, the camp erected Union Chapel, designed by Robert Morris Copeland and currently on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the early 1900's, Shelter Island Heights still had fish processing plants, although those are now defunct. The Prospect Hotel was originally located on White Hill, above the North Ferry landing. The hotel burned down, was rebuilt and burned a second time in 1942. Today, White Hill is a town park. Shelter Island Heights has an active historical association committed to preserving the hamlet's history and unique character.
